Free docent guided tours starting September 14th will be given on the hour: Tuesday and Thursdays at 9, 10 and 11 a.m. Wednesday and Sundays at 1, 2, and 3 p.m. Other days and hours are also available with a reservation. Groups of 10 or more must call ahead to book a tour.

The 1st rancho grant in California of over 75,000 acres was given by King Carlos the third of Spain to the Spanish soldier Juan Jose Dominguez and upon his death the Rancho land was inherited by his grand nephew Manuel Dominguez.

The property is also the site of the very first air meet in the United States in 1910 and the second air meet in the world.

KCET Studio Tour

Once part of an early Spanish land grant, Rancho Los Cerritos Historic Site features one of the few remaining two-story adobes in Southern California. This National, State and Local Historic Landmark provides visitors with educational opportunities that illuminate the past and give a "sense of place" and continuity within our ever-changing society. A visit to the 1844 two-story Spanish-colonial adobe is a step back in time with serene gardens and Victorian furnishings.

California Research Library, Gift Shop and picnic tables available on the premises. Admission is free. Open 1-5 p.m. for self-guided tours Wed. - Fri., with guided tours every hour on the hour on Sat. and Sun. Closed Mon. and Tue. and all City holidays.

Free Stuff - Los Angeles

Avila Adobe  Est. 1818
California State Historic Landmark 145
The oldest building in the city, the adobe was the home of Don Francisco Avila, mayor (alcalde) of Los Angeles in 1810. After his wife died, Avila married Encarnacion Sepulveda in 1822. He died ten years later. In 1847, during the Mexican-American War, Commodore Robert Stockton commandeered the adobe for two weeks as his military headquarters. The family moved away in 1868 and after that the adobe served as a restaurant and a boarding house. By 1928 it had fallen into disrepair and was saved from demolition by Mrs. Christine Sterling. Now restored, the building depicts the Californio lifestyle of the 1840s prior to the American occupation. Olvera Street, El Pueblo De Los Angeles State Historic Park. Built in 1816 by Indian labor supervised by Father Zalvidea of the San Gabriel Mission. It was built on a hillside at the convergence of Los Robles and Mill Canyons. It was Southern California's first water powered gristmill. The mill is open to the public from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Admission is free.

L.A. Historic Cultural Monument 253
It was built in 1899 by Edward Mahar (See Edward Mahar House) at 1st Street and Front Street in the Nob Hill section of San Pedro. Captain William Muller, an early ship builder who built the Catalina Steamers for the Banning Family, bought the house in 1901. When Front Street was widened and portions Nob Hill was leveled in 1912, Muller had the house moved to 575 W. 19th Street, San Pedro. The house stood at this site remained in the Muller family for many years. In recent years the house was moved to its present site at 1542 S. Beacon Street, San Pedro, where it sits proudly on a bluff overlooking the harbor. The house is now a museum and is headquarters of the San Pedro Bay Historical Society. Open the first three Sundays of the month, from 1 to 4 p.m. Admission is free.
