Rancho Guajome Adobe

Rancho Guajome Adobe
Welcome to the Cadillac of Adobes, the Rancho Guajome Adobe. Newly restored in 1996, this 7,000 square foot, 22-room hacienda was once a city unto itself. Built in 1853 by Cave Johnson Couts for his wife Ysidora Bandini, the adobe grew to incluse a school, chapel, store, and the famous inner courtyard. Passersby would be insulting the family if they did not stay and enjoy the hospitality for which the well-known and influential Clouts' were famous.

The Rancho was built on a 2,219 acre Pio Pico land grant, and at one time El Camino Real lay where Santa Fe is now. The house underwent many changes in its years spanning the end of the halcyon Rancho days, to the Victorian addition of a second-story sweing room and gingerbread trim, to the busy silent screen era of the twenties.

Inner Courtyard

The courtyard has been replanted as historically accurate as possible. The Cherokee rose is original from the 1880's as is the bougainvillea. The bird of paridise, both small and giant are from early in this century.
